Chicago, IL – Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters at a press conference on Chicago's West Side, U.S. Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-IL) officially announced he will not seek re-election in 2026 after nearly 30 years of distinguished service in the United States Congress. With deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents of Illinois' 7th District, Congressman Davis passed the torch to State Representative La Shawn K. Ford, offering his full endorsement and agreeing to serve as Chair of Ford's congressional campaign.
"There comes a time when one must listen for new voices and prepare the path for new leadership," said Congressman Davis. "I have proudly served our community, authored legislation that brought over a billion dollars in reentry grants, fought for the Affordable Care Act, expanded access to Medicare and Medicaid, and worked to uplift the most vulnerable. But now is the time for a new chapter. I am proud to endorse State Representative La Shawn K. Ford, an energetic, experienced, and committed leader, to continue the work."
Congressman Davis emphasized that both he and Representative Ford remain committed to serving in their current roles through January 2027. Representative Ford, who currently serves much of the 7th District as part of the 8th Legislative District, accepted the endorsement with gratitude and officially launched his campaign for Congress.
"Congressman Davis has been a mentor, a trailblazer, and a relentless champion for justice, equity, and opportunity," said Rep. Ford. "I am honored by his endorsement and ready to fight for the people of the 7th District in Washington. We are facing urgent challenges—from attacks on Medicaid and Social Security to rising housing costs, drug treatment gaps, and the erosion of civil rights, and I am ready to lead."
A former teacher, small business owner, and seasoned legislator with nearly two decades of experience in Springfield, Ford vowed to bring bold leadership, bipartisan collaboration, and continued advocacy for affordable healthcare, education, housing, and second chances.
"This campaign is not just about politics," added Ford. "It's about protecting our democracy, defending human dignity, and ensuring every resident, from Austin to Bellwood, has a voice in Congress."
